Dear colleagues,

As local organiser and on behalf of the scientific organising committee,
I would like to invite you to the 16th Conference of the International Work Group for Palaeoethnobotany which will be held in Thessaloniki in June 2013.

It is a great honour to be hosting an IWGP conference in Greece, a country well known for its fascinating archaeological sites and monuments as well as for its rich flora comprising approximately 6000 plant species. The campus of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the largest academic institution in Greece, will provide the setting where we will spend most of our time sharing the results of our latest archaeobotanical investigations, exchanging ideas and discussing new archaeobotanical questions and paths for future investigations.

I hope the conference will be stimulating intellectually and pleasing at the same time. Participants of the conference will have the unique opportunity to experience the rich culture of a very old city, founded in 315 BC, and its delicious cuisine that has evolved from the Neolithic through to modern times. Besides the archaeology and food, June will be a wonderful time to explore the local vegetation during the conference excursion.

Looking forward to seeing you in Thessaloniki in June 2013!

Tania Valamoti
